Ah love....It was a rainy day, cold and grim, but as I drove in the tangled GTA traffic that Tuesday April 26th evening the sun began to force her way through. Hello sun!!! The clearing skies were a lovely sunny omen to greet me as I arrived at the Toronto Alternative Arts & Fashion week 2011 ( www.getfat,.ca) at 99 Sudbury, Toronto, Ontario.

Here --->X<------ is a strange performance with Martine Lemieux and I and a chair and a Ferris wheel 2 songs. Song One is Habanera by Nana Miskouri and Song Two is La fin de Fête by the experimental noise musician David Lafrance of Montreal.

And here my dear are the Habanera song lyrics and an English translation. mmmmmmmmmmmhmmmmmmmm.

Here is a print from a demo I did demonstrating offset printing. It is just a single carved line in fir (sapin) and a split colour brayer roll. I am totally in love with it. I start to dream when I look at it. Can you imagine? It is so simple!! It reminds me of the profoundly beautiful drawings of Itee Pootoogook that my mother just bought.

Here he is in full loquacious glory going "Come back, come back, come back mon amour! I didn't mean it! I love you, I'm sorry, I don't mean to disappear into the thickets. I've just got the huge being-a-rabbit issues!" or maybe he is just shouting a list of groceries to his loved one, "22 assorted cabbages, 3 carrots, 9 leeks, 4 tats, 12 onions, 11 sweet peas and some Nasturtiums...what?...yeah, that's right...Nasturtiums, got it?". In any case it is called, The Rabbit and the Gilded Conversation.
I printed it watching Vivienne Westwood's London, which I selected from CTV's video library.

O that's sort of fun!!! Spotted in Toronto outside of Buddies in Bad Times Theatre.

O and another spotting at C Magazine! Ha that was funny and o so very odd running into myself at the bookstore just now...Ok and you know what I did? I immediately checked the numbers to see if I could make some sort of equation. Like was it on page 22? It was on page 43, which is right after page 42, which I am quite fond of and isn't that the numeric answer to Life, meaning and everything in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Doulas Adams... and it's in issue 108....Ha! I like numbers. I inherited this strange system from my maternal grandfather who explained even and odd and prime numbers and even the making of the quadratic equation to me, which gave me a slightly obsessional fondness for the number 2 which is the only even prime number! Yummmm. I have made so many decisions based on the number 2 it is unbelievable.

I am at my parent's place trying to do some watercolours on a miniscule work desk obviously made for a child. The desk is stuffed with bits and pieces of my various pasts and I have discovered a postcard...Back in 2005 I went on a solitary working holiday to St. Michael's printshop in St. John's Newfoundland. I was sad and trying to repair a bleeding heart. It was just what I needed, a trip steeped in fortitudes. I took my mother's fiddle and printing supplies and set to work. At the printshop I met Tom Hammick, what a great artistperson! He ended up writing me the most amazing letter of recommendation and I was accepted into Camberwell's awesome MFA print programme. I didn't go because I ended up being offered a sweet deal at Concordia in Montreal. And here is the postcard that has triggered my nostalgic remembrances.

Stan Krzyzanowski was my wood shop instructor at OCAD in Toronto when I was doing my BFA. His work is so awesome!! Check out his flip books and his Cone Wall piece. His show at Earth Ship opens Friday December 17th. It's so beautiful...I could look at it forever. The cones open and close making designs on the wall in their sea of coniness. It's actually breathtaking....

Here is a picture of Stan's Pine Cone Oscillator on view at Roadside Attractions. It's made with: pine cone, tooth pick, Stamp microcontroller, electronic components, lamps, multi-meter, motor, water with bottle and drain, clock, wood.

Exit Art announces Fracking: Art and Activism Against the Drill. Hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”) is a means of gas extraction that accesses gas trapped more than a mile below the earth’s surface. This exhibition, a project of SEA (Social Environmental Aesthetics), will expose this process of gas extraction that is contaminating water supplies worldwide. Through documentary videos, photography by Jacques del Conte and Michael Forster Rothbart, commissioned works, public responses and literature, it will engage the public in dialogue on this issue through public lectures and calls to action and encourage audiences to continue educating themselves and their communities on fracking and its detrimental effects.
Exit Art invited the public to respond to the issue of fracking by submitting a postcard via mail with original artwork on one side and a written statement on the other. The dozens of responses we received will be on view, forming a collective call to end fracking; postcards will be accepted throughout the run of the exhibition and will be added as they are received.

Tilting at Windmills

I went to see Don Quixote de la Mancha yesterday at Centaur Theatre in Vieux Montreal yesterday. It was so ....lovely! We gave them a standing ovation. The set design and props were just-how-I-like-them-gorgeous, wooden windmills, wooden bicycle horses and donkeys. The half mask use was fascinating. At first I found them too crude and then once I was used to them they were perfect, the actors used them so well, it was totally inspiring. It was a play that was imaginative and lively and beautiful and silly. There was only one child in the audience though and the language was definitely directed towards adults. It was funny but once I started walking down to my seat which was right in front of the stage AA 33 (at one point the Don Quixote character's was standing squished in the aisle right in front of me, he apologised for having his bum in my face)..anyways I was looking around to see if there were any other black people attending besides me, to get a sense of the play's demographic. I couldn't see anyone else who was brown. At the intermission, the other play, A Raisin in the Sun, was also breaking and everyone was black. I almost felt like a traitor as we streamed in pairs back up the stairs heading back to our seats. At the top of the stairs the colours separated. Black people turned right, white people went left. I thought for sure someone would correct me and point me to the other play entrance. Thankfully, that didn't happen.

I love details like this. The 1600's book led to at least 2 terms being introduced into the English language:

1. Quixotic:romantic, idealistic and impractical
2. Tilting at Windmills: Fighting imaginary heroes

I was too enchanted to draw much, but here is a sketch of the dog costume. He even peed onstage!

Perhaps this should be titled "It's ok to cry when you say goodbye to a metallic friend you have to sell for scrap because you can't afford to fix it and it will be squished and mutilated and stripped of parts and you are kind of an animist".

Today my van died and has been towed to the scrap yard. So sad! I will have to replace this part of my identity...Well I guess it's cheaper to pimp my bicycle anyways.

Good news is that the amazing contemporary throat singer Tanya Tagaq has agreed to let me use her song Origin for the Harbourfront shadow puppet play performed in (and filmed by) Libby Hague's Free Radical extravaganza. I don't know what to say! What an honour to be chosen for this workshop. We were only 10, a group of dynamic lovelies performing experimental theatre games. Guillermo Gómez-Peña and James Luna were so unbelievably generous with their energies,fun and imaginative to be with. Good lord they even thanked us in their performance bill!!! What awesome human beings, absolutely no bullshit hierarchy attitude. It was really a touching experience that will fuel me for a long long time. By the way, this piece on the right here is called, Fucking lavender on my fucking table in fucking June. Mmmmmm why so foul-mouthed? Well I first did this intaglio in 2008 from a sketch I was sort of pleased with from my home. I was very shocked to discover that as a print it was completely horrible and saccharine and looked like the first ever print of a first-time printer. It was horrible ewwwwwwwwwwwwww yuck! I immediately made amends by giving it a feisty title to spice it up and then later during a dull slow street sale dreamt in the watercolour animals. It amused me to see people peering in to get a closer look. Hee heeee I'd laugh to myself! At Puces Pop, I eventually sold it, to a man even though I really tried to point out the rude title. I was sad to see it go. I actually tried to dissuade him from buying it!!! But I desperately needed the moola. O the prostitutionary elements of being an artist hmmmmmmmmmm.

Next door (to the left to the left!) was an immaculate garden. I sipped tea and listened to the chestnut tree. Out of the corner of my eye there was a flash of fur. Can you see the cat in the ferns?

I was encouraged to do this teency tiny super simple silly-times-infinity animation with the help of Sean Wainsteim way back when and o-s0-long-ago, 2000? 2003 I don't know I can't read the date at the end. Ok ok so I did the cover illustration for it, but honestly it's a fab little book!! It is a perfect, friendly size and instantly zapped me into my childhood past, reminding me of Beatrix Potter children's books. It is the equivalent of Owl or Chickadee magazine for adults and is filled with many outlandish and exciting scientific adventures that remind us of the gorgeous possibilities, mysteries and oddities that exist on our curious planet. Immediately after reading, I poured myself a glass of red wine, see page 81 to read why!! An uplifting and charming little book my only complaint is that it could have used a few more illustrations...

I realise now that in life there are how things should happen and then there are how things happen.
I recently broke with my longtime lover-friend-confidante. It is truly over as we have officially exchanged all our stuff.
Today I moved his emails into a folder titled "Love".
What does this say about me? I don't know. Perhaps it is akin to a print I once did. The print in question was a portrait of a woman who in her hand held a jar, which in turn contained a heart. The text read " She carried him in her heart everywhere".
At any rate, my love has returned the mug I made for him. I am drinking from it now along the cracked side.

Imagine you are in Patzcuaro, Mexico where it is hot in the sun and cold in the shade. You are tired of seing things to buy and so you wander into an old convent-turned-art museum where you discover the most amazing array of masks. You sit down on the cool stone floor to capture them in watercolour and Indian ink and at once become a sort of spectacle as people step up to you and peer in asking you polite questions in Spanish and smiling. Well! Imagine later you are looking at these odd sketchbook renditions and your mind wanders to envision that all these strange faces are in fact the same person in the throes of an orgiastic sexual encounter, huh! (Either that or trying to change a bolt with the wrong sized spanner.) What if that person's name was Jesus and they were especially capable of faclal manipulation and transformation? That would explain these two pages.

Noh Theatre

Wednesday nacht I went to the Botanical gardens near Pie IX (for the very first time!) to see Japanese Noh theatre. O lalallalalallalallala what a treat! Amazing. I felt lucky to be so enchanted. The presentation included 3 languages, Japanese, French and English. It was fun when a joke was made. The language groups laughed accordingly. First Japanese speakers tittered, then the English and then the French. In fact I was so delighted I didn't even mind the requested audience participation singing. Usually I baulk and cringe, but no, there was I merrily singing along. Very fun. After Katja & I went and laughed and did sidelong spy glances and ate good food served 2 feet from the floor where we were sitting on cushions, oy Tampopo!!!

This piece which is cheekily-tongue-in-cheek called Thinking of All the Famous People I know is currently on display in the DIASPORArt exhibit at Rideau Hall, Ottawa. It was bought as part of the Canada Council Art Bank's Purchase Program.

This piece came about during my residency at Atelier Circulaire in Montreal in 2008. It started as a monoprint which I later developed with indian ink, watercolour, acrylics and gold leaf.

The image is a snapshot of a moment. In fact, everything has been caught mid-movement and nothing is actually still, except for the Egyptian-inspired mummified dog figure on the bottom left. This figure is a reccurring motif that I use, and whenever he appears is silently paired with the phrase "Where are you going please?". He is a self-portrait. In the image's centre are three Mickey Mouse figures arranged in a triangle. Mickey Mouse is for me the polite version of blackface, reminiscent of early cartoon depictions of African-Americans. The 3 skulls are cheerful memento mori. These tumbling figures are topped by a clown head. The fish head on high with mouth opened wide, the floating anteater head, the parroquet, the golden arm offering a golden handshake and the ibis have more nebulous roles.

The characters depicted are from my imagined perfect conceptual circus. The circus is a recurring theme that I work with. I am fascinated by the circus as a social barometer for definitions of normality and glamour. My inspiration comes from Calder's circus, Banraku puppet theatre, the street performers of Covent Garden, Hieronymous Bosch and records of ancient street theatre. I am currently working on my Concordia MFA graduate exhibition of a circus installation that is prompted to perform as the audience presents itself.

In December of 2009 I was at the Montreal Notre-Dame Salvation Army checking out their awesome toy collection and trying to decide which ones I would pimp for my bazaar table at the Puce Pop craft fair. Now as I was wandering around I could hear in the background a group of spirited and humorous men talking amongst themselves. I could sense it was a bit of a performance they were giving. I had seen them before at this particular S.A. and was always curious to know if they worked there or were just hanging out. They seemed to be treating the place a bit like a clubhouse. Anyways, it turns out I was caught on film. The funny part is that the film, which I learned I was in through friends of friends...was directed by my art studio neighbour!!! literally I am 32A and he is number 32 and I'd never met him!!! The film is called Too Many Things and the neighbour is Donigan Cummings.

And I learn again and again that life is lovely and surprising, koo koo choo look at you.

I like to pimp my artworks. I use sequins, glitter, gold, rhinestones...ya basically anything that’s anything shiny. I want the work to glitter-and-glisten and catch your eye. Is it trashy or magical? I don't care, I put gold on everything. I can’t help myself, it’s part of an over-decorating gene I come by honestly. I’ll be looking at something I’ve made and I’ll be like, “hmmm what’s it missing?” and the word gold will whisper through my mind. Sometimes I want to cover the whole thing in gold, until just a little bit is peeking through. Gold makes everything look good.

80 Du Parc

O yes, and here is Taien Ng-Chan's whimsical and sensitive film 80 Du Parc. I helped with some of the set pieces, like the trees and the kitchen and the bus chairs. At the time of the shooting I was the illest I have ever been in my living memory. I almost felt like I could die. I had an insane hallucinating fever and could barely walk. Every time I shut my eyes I saw electric blue hallucinations, which I have always meant to draw. They were quite beautiful. I didn't get my strength back for months!! It was loopy, but at least it didn't kill me. Turned out to be strep throat and maybe mono but I never followed up on the funky liver test.

Once upon a time I got the most perfect for me job ever. All I had to do was make, modify and paint models for Louisa Schabas to decorate her Parc avenue, Montreal street set. They could be car models, animal models, unicron models, turkey models, bird models, people models. I could do it forever. It was pure bliss!!!! I made almost ALL the people BROWN as a form of quiet micro-activism. Maybe I had one token white person though. Anyways no-one noticed they all thought they just had tans...hee hee hee. My favorites were the miniature, like very very miniature people I did in breakdance skeleton suits flaunting Trinidadian flags.

Ok, so this is how this project turned out. I had ONE portrait request, which I insisted on of my friend Rebecca, who kindly visited me. And ONE love letter attempt. However, it fizzled before the end. In fact I barely got the "Dear so-and-so " part down before the project died. I had made a mistake in writing the names and wanted to include this in the letter it was after all a documentation of our negotiations and miscommunications. This did not please my client. We aborted the project. I tried to refuse payment, but she hid a loonie behind my flower vase....

I am in shock. I still have all her emails. It was for her class that this virtual derive was begun. Amazingly she never complained about her condition. I never knew and had always hoped to run into her. I send fond thoughts and sympathies to her family.

Interviews and more love letters

Sometimes I say "helloooo Hamilton and Hillfield Strathallan College" from afar, where it's freaking safe via Hamilton Arts & Letters magazine. They are lovely there and have great stories to tell.

First I had an interview.

The Portrait Project

At one point I had a love letter and a portrait business. Both were performances of sorts. For the portrait project I would install myself in the person's house and hang out drawing them. The portrait shown was a Valentine's day gift from one lover to the other. The lover who was receiving the gift was also a phenomenol chef who had been trained in cooking schools in France. He prepared for me a sumptuous dinner of sole carefully arranged in a grid tiny fish balls and floating in a beautiful gravy. The only problem was I thought I was freaking allergic to sole! I had had 2 allergic reactions while eating it, my throat got itchy and my lips began to swell. I was terrified, having consequently avoided eating it most of my life. I literally thought I was going to die, but I was too polite to say anything. Well, I survived, I didn't have a reaction. Turns out I didn't react to it, but I still avoid eating it out of habit, just in case.

The Ghost Story

I sat at a table drawing in a house made of windows and doors while 4 fun men chatted in French. It was a magical. I didn't know it at the time but as I drew this impossible moment, which is actually the composite of at least 4 hours condensed into a single frame, Jean-Pierre was telling a ghost story with one arm raised high, with a cigarette burning into the night. There was a posh cat too, fashionably svelte who wandered in and out and in again.

The trees are inspired from different parts of my history. On Mondays Catherine and I meet, draw for 4 hours, drink tea and speak franglais. Here she is in her fun backyard in Montreal est. It was a beautiful sunny hot day. I got a tan. Who knew it would snow the next day? Life is loopy. What you can't see is that there is a huge, happy, handsome black puppy frolicking about and eating whatever it can.

She wears slipgliss and does really short, to the point shadow puppet shows where she also acts as the candy butcher distributing free popcorn with hidden messages in the form of fortune cookies nestled amongst the fluffy kernels before her acts.

An early chilly August morning arranging rocks project on the shore Lake Huron. We are image number 5. When we arrived there were 2 HUGE black birds eating a massive beached fish. They were turkey vultures. I've been visiting this spot since I was 6 and I've never ever ever seen them before. It felt a little magical.

Once upon a time I went dancing with a rabbit. J.J.Fad was playing and I was wearing a really good wig. I drank a little too much and smoked too many cigarettes. But that was after I did a really short boring performance with my dancing partner there. It all got complicated after that day. Souls, soulmates all got bundled up into one nasty gnarly mess. I started to growl inappropriately. I'd catch myself as I was drinking too many coffees. I started to sacrifice sleep to Not Sleeping. My body started to change and I was no longer in control, it took me to warm places I wanted to be. Leigh Bowery was there and kept giving me bad catty advice including dodgy clothing options. I began to doubt his sanity. I made frijoles refreitas dancing and smiling the whole time. At last one day I was happy but it didn't last. There was just too much damn traffic. We had a last meal and parted ways. After that I became a candy butcher and a big phat ghost in need of a tan lodged itself in my basement and just wouldn't come up the damn stairs. The Circus & the Pimp’s Jalopy: Part II

The Circus & the Pimp’s Jalopy is an ongoing multimedia installation project. This first incarnation was set in the theatre-like scene of a shadowy forest clearing in a dilapidated warehouse. Using a collage of clichéd pop culture experiences (circus waltzes, crowd sounds, popcorn smells, costumed performers) to quickly communicate a carnival atmosphere the piece works to create a space that is both achingly familiar and unsettlingly foreign. Objects and performers repeat strange behavioural loops using familiar items in new contexts. What can it all mean? How does perception structure experience? This work seeks to intrigue viewers into a heightened sense of the present as they become conscious discerners of their immediate surroundings.
